South Africa's court permits former President Zuma claim return to prison

Former South African President Jacob Zuma will be permitted to pursue a court deciding that arranged him back to prison to carry out the rest of his punishment, an appointed authority controlled Tuesday.

Zuma, 80, had been delivered on clinical parole recently, yet the Gauteng High Court in the capital, Pretoria, decided last week that his parole had been unlawful.

On Tuesday, Judge Elias Matojane said the ex-president would now be able to pursue that finding.

"As a result of his ailment and old age, he really wants sympathy, compassion and empathy," Matojane said of Zuma in conveying the judgment.

Zuma was indicted and condemned for resisting a court request requesting that he show up before an administration supported commission testing claims of defilement during his residency as president from 2009 to 2018.
