Friends costar Matthew Perry had a lot of support from Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer; but, the Emmys producers explained why they chose not to include them in a tribute.

Call it the year that Matthew Perry's legacy is honored at the Emmys.

The Friends theme song "I'll Be There For You" was played during the in memoriam portion of the 2023 Emmy Awards, paying poignant respect to the actor who passed away over three months ago from the severe effects of ketamine.

The last picture in the photo montage was of Perry. Nevertheless, the cast members of his television show Friends Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer did not participate in the special section that aired on January 15.

Jeannae Rouzan-Clay, executive producer of the Emmys, stated to The Hollywood Reporter on January 16 that "it's still very fresh for them."

Jesse Collins, a fellow executive producer, mentioned that the group had talked about getting the Friends cast together "early on" in the Emmy preparation process.

"But I can imagine, from their side, they're mourning someone who was still very close to them," said Collins. "We all need to accept that they were their own family, even though I can't speak for them. Most likely, it was a bit too soon."
