The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the extension of the linking of telephone lines and National Identification Numbers (NINs), moving the deadline from April 15, 2024 to July 31, 2024.




This development was confirmed to Punch by reliable sources in the telecommunications industry.





The extension, communicated to telcos in an official letter, comes after several requests for more time to thoroughly consult the common challenges faced by subscribers and carriers and ensure compliance. I was disappointed.




This move is expected to give subscribers the additional time they need to connect their phone lines to her NIN, ensuring uninterrupted service while complying with regulatory requirements.




"This means that this special extension from April 15 to July 31 is for people who have four SIM cards connected to one phone line," the official said.




The closure process, which began in February, was carried out in three stages. The first phase took place on February 28, 2024, followed by the second phase on Friday, March 29, 2024.





The third phase has been postponed to July 31, 2024.




The industry regulator announced that approximately 40 million lines not linked to NIN were blocked during the first period on February 28, 2024.




The exact number of lines affected by Friday's deadline is not yet known, but carriers are expected to continue disconnecting lines not linked to NIN, the person said.




Telecommunications operators are expected to prioritize the authentication of existing subscribers over new subscribers during this extension period.
