Newcastle beats Fulham at home

Bruno Guimarães scored his fourth goal of the season as Newcastle defeated Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The
Brazilian scored the winning goal with less than 10 minutes left, thanks to substitute Harvey Barnes, just after Fabian Schaal had his attempt called off for a foul in the build-up game.

Newcastle
currently sit one point behind sixth-placed Manchester United and are firmly in contention to qualify for Europe next season.

Fulham
remained in 13th place, with Willian, Joao Parinha and Rodrigo Muñiz all missing big chances for Marco Silva's home side.

Fulham
got off to a bright start after suffering a disastrous defeat to Nottingham Forest in midweek, but missed opportunities allowed Eddie Howe's visitors to improve. Anthony Gordon, back in Newcastle's starting lineup after a suspension, was always a threat and almost broke the deadlock with a 20-yard drive that came inches from goal.

Behind
the scenes of the battle for fourth place between Tottenham and Aston Villa, the pursuit of the lower tiers of European soccer will continue next season.

West
Ham maintained their seventh place with a come-from-behind victory over Wolves, with the Hammers and Newcastle closing the gap on Manchester United, who play Liverpool on Sunday.

Having
tasted European experience in the Champions League earlier this season, Newcastle will be hoping for more of the same in the coming years, even if this time with a spot in the Europa League and Europa Conference League at stake. Are expected.

Guimarães'
goal was celebrated with great joy and relief by the away fans, although coach Eddie Howe's side had been plagued by injuries for much of the season. After coming under tremendous pressure from Fulham throughout the match, the Magpies proved they were ready for the task at the end of the season.

Defeat
against Newcastle has left Fulham in mid-table and it looks like the season is coming to an end.

Marco
Silva's side have had some good matches against top-flight players at times this season, and the prospect of them competing for a place in Europe in the future didn't seem out of the ordinary.

Parinha,
not particularly known for his finishing ability, had the Cottage's best chance of the game, but his shot only went wide from six yards.

Muniz, who has scored eight goals in nine Premier League games, had a clear chance in the first half and was expected to score, but his shot went straight at Martin Dubravka. Fulham's performance has been poor since their 3-0 win against Tottenham on March 16th. They drew 3-3 with bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, but on Tuesday they lost 3-1 at relegation-chasing Forest.

Six
points from these two games would have put Silva's side in the race for European qualification, but they now appear to be out of contention.

Given
the summer reinforcements and Silva's increased time with the team, Fulham are keenly aware of the damage their slump will ultimately do to their season and believe a more sustained push towards Europe is realistic. You might feel it.
